Penang to ban foreign cooks in hawker stalls

The Penang government will implement a ban on foreign cooks in hawker stalls to protect their food heritage.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said that hawker licences were only given to the locals but the local council discovered that a few hawkers had employed foreign cooks.

He said the local council was currently gathering feedback from the public on the matter and that the ban could be implemented as soon as early next year.

"We are considering to revoke their hawker licences if they are found to hire foreigners as their main cooks but we need to get public feedback before we proceed with the implementation," he told reporters Saturday.
According to research conducted by the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP), 119 foreigners were working as cooks in 68 hawker centres in Penang Island.

Lim said Penang was famous for its hawker food and the food must retain a local taste instead of a foreign taste.

"It defeats the purpose of approving the hawker licence only for the locals if the hawkers employed foreigners as their main cooks," he said.

He also reminded the hawkers to only employ foreigners as their kitchen helper, waiters or waitresses.
"We will take into consideration the public's needs before proceeding with the implementation," he said.

Over 68 hawker centres were screened during the research, with the majority of the hawker stalls in Bayan Baru, Relau, Jelutong and Tanjung Tokong operated by foreigners. - Bernama

Ok, this move I 100% agree. I do not want our local hawker food to lose it's style and taste due to foreigner cooks! Support support support!

He said there were four localities with the highest dengue cases namely Taman Dahlia in Butterworth; Taman Seri Impian, Bukit Mertajam; Jalan Kuantan and Jalan C.Y Choy here.

He said that the district health offices and the local authorities would launch the 'gotong-royong perdana' two weeks before the Muslim month of Ramadan.

Penang Free School (PFS) Bicentenary Heritage Fun Ride

Hundreds of cyclists thronged the streets here at a bicentenary heritage fun ride organised by Penang Free School (PFS) last Sunday.

Families with children in tow and friends took part in the curtain-raiser to the PFS 200th anniversary celebrations in 2016.

The cyclists had a gala time on the scenic 15km route in the heritage zone and beyond. They rode on conventional bicycles and tandems, bicycles for two riders.

PFS bicentenary committee organising chairman Datuk Abdul Rafique Abdul Karim said the participants stopped at 15 historical sites -- such as the P. Ramlee House, Jalan Hamilton, Taman Hutchings, Jalan Hargreaves and Jalan Pinhorn -- which have historical links to PFS.

"The bicentennial celebration countdown has started and the fun ride is one of the many events leading up to the actual day on Oct 21, 2016," said Rafique.

Among the dignitaries who attended PFS was Malaysia's first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, silverscreen icon P. Ramlee, and Penang second chief minister Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu.

Rafique was present at SMK Hutchings in Lebuh Farquhar to flag off the event which ended at the PFS pavilion in Jalan Masjid Negeri.

The PFS Bicentenary Heritage Trail Map, with the school crest displayed below, was mounted on a board at the school compound was unveiled by Rafique and his committee members.

He said the celebration was a milestone for the school as it is the oldest English school in the country.

Rafique is expecting about 3,000 alumni locally and overseas to converge on the island in 2016.

There was also a lucky draw where five participants won bicycles as grand prizes.

PFS alumnus Juzaidi Raias, 46, who works for a petroleum company based in Garraf, Iraq, came to participate in the fun ride. He was on a month-long leave.

"PFS is close to my heart and it is sentimental for me to come back to my alma mater.

" The ride, with my fellow alumni, brings back feelings of nostalgia. I left the school 29 years ago.

"I like cycling and the best part of the ride is I get to visit the places associated to PFS," he said.

"Sketches of Memories -- Penang" (HK, Taiwan artists sketch Penang heritage)

Brought together by a mutual love for art and heritage, six artists from Taiwan and Hong Kong are exhibiting their artistic interpretations of George Town's vibrant cityscape until June 23.

Titled Sketches of Memories -- Penang, 15 framed artworks, completed when the artists visited Penang last year, are on display.

The exhibition also included several books containing sketches of George Town.

A collaboration between the George Town World Heritage Inc (GTWHI) and Mugong Living Merchant House of Taiwan, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary view of Penang's state capital through the artists' eyes.

Mugong Living Merchant House co-owner Sujata Ng said the artists were touched by the similarities of George Town and the towns in Taiwan before development changed the face of the landscape there.

"The artists were keen to visit Penang, particularly George Town, when we shared our experiences about Penang in Taiwan.

"They were glad to see that much of Penang reminded them of the Taiwan of old," said Johor-born Ng, who lived in Penang for two decades, before leaving for Taiwan two years ago.

"Definitely a lot of Penang has also changed over the last decade but fortunately George Town has retained much of its heritage and maintained its buildings and landscape," said Ng who co-owns the Mugong House with her husband.

GTWHI public relations manager Jack Ong agreed that the skyline in Penang has changed but its living heritage has continued to thrive and survive to this day.

"Penang has preserved and maintained much of its eclectic-styled buildings, colonial mansions, shrines, temples, mosques, pre-war houses built over generations besides its exquisite food, unique cultural traditions and festivities.

"George Town is an example of a true living heritage worthy of a Unesco World Heritage Site citation," he said.

Ong added that he found it meaningful to participate in something artistic.

"There is always an element of personal expression. Each artwork on display is a testament of the artist's fondness and interest in George Town," he said.

Guest-of-honour, Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai, said more and more people were contributing to the growing art scene in Penang.

"The vibrant art scene in Penang reflects the interest of people from around the world in our city's culture and heritage.

"We must welcome the ideal of cultural exchange, bringing together artists and art from different social, cultural and ethnic background to create opportunities for cultural expression," he said.

Wong added that Penang was now the cultural forefront in terms of the art, cultural and creative industries.
"In Penang, arts and heritage really matter. Art and heritage are at the very heart of George Town.

"They form part of the discourse of our way of life," he said.

The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and closed during lunch time between 1pm and 2pm from Monday to Thursday and between 12.15pm and 2.45pm on Friday.

Adequate Cooking Oil And Flour In Penang...DON'T SPECULATE !!!

There are adequate supplies of cooking oil and wheat flour in Penang and no complaints of shortage have been received so far.

The Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim advised consumers to refrain from buying the goods in bulk and creating a shortage.

"Consumers must also be smart in handling the crisis and report any hoarding by suppliers or shortages to authorities such as the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism," he said here Thursday.

He was commenting on a media report which quoted a consumer association in Kedah as saying there was a scarcity of the two items in the state for the past two weeks.

Prior to this Abdul Malik had a meeting with the Penang Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Office, Penang Consumers Association, Pacific Hypermarket chain, Gama and Queensbay AEON supermarkets, Seberang Flour Mills Sdn Bhd, FFM Marketing Sdn Bhd, Johor Bahru Flour Mills Sdn Bhd and Kean Seng Trading Co.

"As a result of the meeting the state government hopes it can get a commitment from the responsible parties to resolve this crisis," he said.

'Line Not So Clear' At Nasi Kandar Outlet...alamak !!!

GEORGE TOWN, June 2 (Bernama) -- A dispute over the rotation of management at the Line Clear Nasi Kandar Restaurant here has forced the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) to issue an ultimatum to the four partners.

MPPP Licensing Division director Azman Sirun has asked them to resolve their dispute in two weeks or face eviction as three of the partners had set up stalls in a back lane near the restaurant in Jalan Penang, causing clutter and unhygienic conditions.

He said the MPPP was informed that one of the four partners had refused to abide by an arrangement that had been in force since the 1950s whereby the partners would take turns annually to operate the outlet.

"A meeting was arranged between the MPPP Licensing Division and the traders on June 28, 2013. However, no understanding was reached in determining the rotation of management.

"We wrote to them on Dec 23, 2013, advising them to find a solution and submit the documents on the arrangement among them," he told reporters after a meeting with three of the partners here today.

Azman said that if the four partners did not come to an agreement in two weeks, the Licensing Division would issue a notice of eviction so as to reorganise the hawker activity there in accordance with the by-laws of the MPPP.

He said the stalls set up by the other partners at the back lane had resulted in clutter and unhygienic conditions.

What happened??? If they continue like this, sooner or later LineClear will be all cleared out !!! For the sake of business, they should work together...it's not like Penang Nasi Kandar competition is not stiff...
