Multilingual state officers in the offing ???

Hmm...I LOVE THIS! The state government have the heart for everyone...

Do not be surprised the next time you visit a government department In Penang, and the front desk officers greet and converse with you in Mandarin, Hokkien, Tamil or even in sign language.

This effort State Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said was an on-going process to train officers manning the front desk to speak different languages.

He said the programme started last year, with 40 people attending each session at any one time.

“We want these officers to be able to serve the able and disabled in a comfortable and easy way,” he told reporters after launching a three-day basic anatomy and physiology course for members of the Penang Blind Development Association at a hotel here yesterday.

Phee also said more opportunities need to be given to the blind especially by the hospitality industry.

“St Nicholas Home have their own training centre and massage rooms. This is one area where the state government can help by promoting the place to tourists,” he added.

e-dividend payment system by Q3 2010

Public-listed companies will be required to provide an e-dividend payment system to shareholders by the third quarter of next year.

"Investors will be given a one-year grace period to provide their bank account number to Bursa Malaysia Depository to enable the dividend payments to be credited directly into their bank account," the Securities Commission (SC) said yesterday.

It plans to undertake a series of investors' awareness programmes to familiarise investors with the benefits of e-dividends.

Stockbroking companies, meanwhile, will by mid-2010 be required to provide e-share payment options for clients to receive and make payments on their share transactions.

This way, payments will be credited into bank accounts more quickly and efficiently compared with cheques.

"The e-dividends and e-share payment initiatives are an integral part of the initiative to move towards a paperless environment and promote the usage of electronic payments in the capital market," the SC said in a statement yester-day.

Rossi claims 2009 championship as Stoner wins the race

Valentino Rossi has claimed his seventh title on the highest level of MotoGP as he finished third in Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix. The race was won by Casey Stoner who dominated the race from the start. Dani Pedrosa finished second, while Jorge Lorenzo ended fourth.

Stoner's second successive win was impressive enough, as was his astounding 14.666s margin of victory, but it was the Italian's result that secured his ninth world title - a seventh in the premier class - as he defended his 2008 crown, with Dani Pedrosa finishing second with his 78th career podium across all classes.

The race started on a wet track after a 35-minute delay due to rain, and there was drama from the off. A problem during the sighting lap with his machine for Jorge Lorenzo meant that failure to join the starting grid in time resulted in relegation from second to the back.

It made little difference to the Spaniard however as he flew up to overtake Rossi, who dropped to tenth after a sluggish start from pole position. Lorenzo eventually finished in fourth position.

Todt becomes FIA President

Jean Todt has been elected as new President of the FIA after enjoying a comfortable victory in elections on Friday. With the voting having taken place at the Paris headquarters of the motorsport governing body, the Frenchman beats Finland's Ari Vatanen to succeed Max Mosley, who in-turn moves into retirement.
With leadership of the FIA changing on Friday for the first time since 1993, both candidates and their relevant cabinet members were able to host a 15-minute presentation, with Todt leading proceedings.

Following this - with a supervisor overseeing the procedure - votes was cast by the relevant FIA member groups from various countries, with those nations which hold more than one significant motoring club either having to agree on one member or cast a blank vote.

Ultimately, with 12 invalid votes, the former Ferrari Team Principal held a significant lead with 135 ballots marked in his favour as opposed to the 49 for Vatanen, World Rally Champion of 1981. Consequently, Todt now starts his a first four-year term as leader of the federation.

investPenang’s 3 wishes for Budget 2010

Haha...the federal government will always hear you, but they will always ignore you as well...
State investment arm investPenang Bhd has submitted to the finance minister three wishes for the business sector in Budget 2010, said chairman of its executive committee Datuk Lee Kah Choon.
He said the wishes were for better quality graduates and post-graduates, government support and incentives for renewable energy and the provision of quality infrastructure.
“As the country primes itself for economic recovery, adequate and appropriate reorganisation and incentives are required to further expedite the recovery process. The requests from investPenang will further assist in the quest for a speedy recovery,” Lee said in a statement on Oct 14.
He said the availability of local graduates and post-graduates in terms of number and quality was a cause of concern to the industry.
Lee said the MNCs had pointed out that local graduates lacked the skill sets for high-technology industrial activities. Additionally, local graduates were not conversant in English, the world’s business language.

Astro wins football league broadcast rights

ALAMAK!!! 50% more than the current deal? So what now? We just paid extra rm12 for sport package 2 months ago....with this deal, are we gonna PAY MORE AGAIN come next season??? Why can't the government do something so that ASTRO doesn't monopoly the satelite tv field? Or is it they purposely act dumb and do nothing???

Astro All Asia Networks plc has won the bid for the rights to broadcast the Barclays Premier League (BPL) for the next three seasons for about RM800mil, sources told StarBiz.

The vendor of the BPL rights is Britain-based Football Association Premier League (FAPL).
Over the last few weeks, a bidding war had erupted for the much-sought-after BPL rights, with Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) and ESPN STAR Sports believed to have been involved.

Despite emerging victorious, Astro will still have to grapple with how it is going to recoup the high fees it is paying for the rights, believed to be at least 50% more than what it had paid previously.

The cost of BPL content makes up about a third of Astro’s total content cost and is not profit generating in itself. But BPL is still a major pull factor for Astro’s Malaysian subscribers.

An analyst said there was a limit to how much Astro could raise prices for its sports package as it would not want to risk losing customers. That means that its profit margins may take a hit.

On the other hand, Astro would no longer have to buy BPL content from intermediary ESPN STAR Sports, which was the previous successful bidder.

Buying the rights from ESPN also involved some unfavourable terms, where most of the revenue comes from advertisements shown during intervals of BPL games belonged to ESPN.

“If Astro is able to keep those ad revenues, this should help it stem the margin erosion,” the analyst added.

Astro is also likely to produce the entire BPL show – which includes talk shows and match analysis – now that it owns the rights directly. Previously, ESPN had done so and had factored that into its price to Astro.

It is believed that TM had sought to buy the BPL content to make its planned broadband TV service attractive.

However, it is unlikely TM will have had its infrastructure for broadband TV up and running in time for the next BPL season. Hence, if it had won the BPL bid, TM might have had to resort to re-selling the BPL content, possibly to Astro.

Astro’s established network and subscriber base is another factor that FAPL is likely to have considered when awarding the bid.

AS1M allocation to ethnic groups extended to Dec 31

Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB) has extended the Amanah Saham 1Malaysia (AS1M) subscription allocation to ethnic groups to Dec 31, 2009.

PNB president and group chief executive Tan Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman said the decision to extend the allocation ratio was to provide extra time for people from all ethnic groups to invest in the fund.

The investors of AS1M came from various economic backgrounds including medium and low-income earners, he said in a statement on Oct 1.

AS1M, a fixed price fund with a size of 10 billion units, was launched on July 31, 2009 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

It is open to all Malaysians with an allocation of 50% for bumiputeras, 30% for Chinese, 15% for Indians and 5% for other ethnic groups.

As of Sept 27, more than 2.5 billion units had been subscribed by 165,661 investors.

So if you still haven't buy yet and have the cash or have the intention to buy, what are you waiting for???

Honeywell's Penang facility to be fully operational in 3 months

HONEYWELL Aerospace Penang is expected to begin full operation within the next three months, its president Tim Mahoney said yesterday.

Mahoney, who is also the chief executive officer, said construction of Honeywell's state-of-the art aerospace facility started in May 2008 and was completed last December.

"Staffing and training began in the middle of 2008 and currently we have recruited about 500 employees, with all of them having completed more than 30,000 hours of training here and in the US," he said at a news conference in Penang. Mahoney said the Penang plant would be serving not only the region but also the global aviation industry with premier avionics products.

"The avionics produced here are ultimately used everyday on a wide range of planes built by the world's major aircraft manufacturers," he said, adding that the company had invested more than RM520 million in the plant located in Seberang Perai.

According to him, US-based Honeywell offers about 40,000 aerospace components and its Penang plant is expected to be the company's main production centre. - Bernama

So anyone out there wanna apply the job at Honeywell and take up the new exciting challenge??? :p

Happy Birthday China!

Happy Birthday to China (People's Republic of China) !!! It's a national day celebration and they will be having a week off!!! As far as I know, China doesn't always have holidays like we do in Malaysia, but whenever it's holiday, it's gonna be a long one for them.

Brief description of the China National Day:
The PRC was founded on October 1, 1949 with a ceremony at Tiananmen Square. The Central People's Government passed the Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China on December 2, 1949 and declared that October 1 is the National Day.

The National Day marks the start of one of the two Golden Weeks in the PRC. The National Day is celebrated throughout mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau with a variety of government-organised festivities, including fireworks and concerts. Public places, such as Tiananmen Square in Beijing, are decorated in a festive theme. Portraits of revered leaders, such as Sun Yat-sen, are publicly displayed.

Lack of posting for September

For the first time in many many months, I noticed that I have not managed to have an average of a post a day in my blog. That's kinda my aim to have this average number of posting everyday, but somehow there're just too many things to deal with for the past month of September. Hopefully I can be back on track for the number of postings. Also if you noticed carefully, there aren't many activities posting in Penang recently by me due to my schedule. To post this event trail, I need to normally do a lot of reading and referring, so sorry folks! And of course thanks for your patience...really really appreciate it...
