Botanical Garden Arch In Penang To Be Demolished

The newly built arch at the Penang Botanical Garden will be demolished soon at the request of the public and following opposition from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who claim its construction was not environmental friendly.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said the decision to demolish the RM150,000 arch was made after obtaining agreement from the cabinet.

"The cabinet unanimously agreed with the suggestion by the ministry to demolish the arch because we listen to the views and voice of the people," she told reporters, here Saturday.

She said the arch would be demolished after the agency concerned had held discussions with the contractor.

She said based on the survey carried out by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on the construction of the arch, 71 percent of the 1,225 respondents agreed that it sould be demolished.
