Penang state govt 'saves' RM35m in 2008 under Pakatan leadership

I'm not sure how the figures were obtained, but nevertheless, I'm very happy that this state government at least revealed this kind of data. This is much much more transparent compared to the darked side previous state government...Thumbs up for the current state government!

The Penang state government has "saved" RM35.41 million in its operational expenditure in 2008 following various cost-saving initiatives implemented after the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government took over.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said though the estimates for the 2008 operational expenditure had been RM319 million, the state government only spent RM283 million in total for 2008.

"This is a 11.1% savings which the state government will channel towards other much needy causes.

"The state government's initiatives including open tender system, flying economy or budget class airlines and also hotel accommodation, lower allowances for directors in state owned agencies, freezing purchase of assets and lower tenders sought for various projects has paid off.

"With the savings from these, we have been able to give 170,000 families RM100 each in ex-gratia payments to tide them over.

"The rest of the savings would also be used to benefit the 1.5 million Penangites.

"In the past, the operational expenditure has always experienced deficits but we have succeeded in a substantial savings for the state government," Lim said today at a press conference.

He added that the development expenditure for 2008 also has seen encouraging reductions which also saw savings for the state government.

Lim said the development expenditure savings would be revealed at a later date.

"When we say we are a people's government, we must prove our words by actions, and we have done just that," he added.
