Penang to re-live World Music Festival ?

Good, if this is what people wants and will not burden too much the state government, let's bring this event back here !

THE Penang Tourism Department Committee has offered to take over the organising of the Penang World Music Festival from its federal counterpart this year.

The event, that was previously organised by the Penang Action Tourism Council (PTAC), was cancelled last year due to lack of funds.

State Tourism Development, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang said his office wrote to the Tourism Ministry last November to request a RM1mil grant to organise the three-day event this year.

“The organisation of such an event will need over RM1mil and take about six months, and the Penang Government is willing to pump in any necessary additional funds provided we receive allocation from the Tourism Ministry,” Law said.

He added that the festival that was first held in the state in 2007 attracted over 10,000 visitors each year.

“Penang has yet to receive any reply on our request (to the Tourism Ministry).

“If that fails, we believe we could go ahead with a smaller two-day music festival if we can garner RM500,000 in private sponsorship,” Law added.

Last year, the then PTAC chairman Datuk Kee Phaik Cheen was reported saying that RM2.5mil was needed to organise the event.
