AirAsia to fly Penang-Chennai starting as soon as August 09

AirAsia Bhd has received the Transport Minister’s approval to fly the Penang-Chennai, India route and the flights could start as soon as three months.

AirAsia Group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes said on June 1 the low-cost carrier hopes to start flying the Penang-Chennai route in three months, pending other approvals.

"We are looking at seven flights per week out of Penang, or one flight daily,” he said, adding the Penang-Chennai route would be the only one for Penang this year.

Fernandes was speaking to reporters in Penang after Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat announced the ministry’s approval for the flights. Ong, Fernandes, AirAsia chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Ting Lai were in Penang to witness the AirAsia’s inaugural flight for the Penang-Singapore route.

Ong said AirAsia had made the request in the last quarter of 2008 to fly the Penang-Chennai route, but the ministry would leave it to AirAsia to decide on the frequency.
